Studying in west London and putting off a haircut because of the cost? Our student discount at Butler and Lawler takes 15% off adult cutting and colour services, so a proper cut or a colour refresh at our Hammersmith salon costs noticeably less than the list price. Bring a valid student ID to your appointment and the discount is applied on the day.

What the student discount covers

The offer is 15% off adult cutting and colour services. That includes a ladies' cut and blow dry, a gents' cut and finish, and the full range of colour work: highlights, balayage, permanent tint, semi-permanent colour and toning.

You can see the full list of what we do on our cutting and styling page and our hair colour page, and every price is published openly on our pricing page so you can work out what your appointment will cost before you book.

How to claim it

There are three simple steps.

One, book your appointment. You can book online or call the salon on 020 8748 0306. Tell us you are a student when you book so we can note it against your appointment.

Two, bring your student ID. A valid student card or university ID shown at the appointment is all we need. We do not need it in advance, just on the day.

Three, if you are having colour for the first time, book a consultation first. New colour clients need a consultation, and possibly a skin test, before they can book their first colour service. This is free, essential, and it saves a lot of guesswork.

Why a colour consultation is worth the extra visit

If you are new to colour, or new to us, that first conversation matters more than people expect. Your colourist looks at your hair in natural light, talks through your colour history, and gives you an honest view of what is achievable in one session and what might take longer.

It also covers the practical side. Where colour will touch the scalp, a skin test is needed at least 48 hours beforehand, so the consultation is the natural moment to arrange it. We have written more about why a hair colour consultation matters if you want the detail.

For students in particular, the consultation is where budget and upkeep get discussed properly. If you want something that grows out softly and does not need topping up every few weeks, say so. Balayage, for example, tends to suit people who want longer between appointments, and we have covered what affects the cost of balayage in London in a separate post.

A salon that suits student timetables

Butler and Lawler has been on Dalling Road since 1990, a couple of minutes from Ravenscourt Park station and easy to reach from across Hammersmith and west London. We are open Tuesday to Sunday, which helps if your week is built around lectures and shifts rather than a standard nine to five.

Our stylists are London trained and the salon is a member of the Green Salon Collective, so hair, foils and tint tubes are recycled rather than binned. You can meet the team before you book if you would like to see who you will be sitting with.

Student discount FAQs

Do I need to book in advance to get the student discount?

The student discount is available at any time we have availability. It is best to book in advance though, as we work on an appointment system rather than a walk in service.

What counts as valid student ID?

A current student card or university ID card is fine, as long as it is in date. Bring it with you to the appointment rather than sending it ahead. If you are unsure whether yours will be accepted, give us a call before you come in.

Does the student discount apply to children's haircuts?

No. The offer covers adult cutting and colour services. Children's haircuts for ages 10 to 17 are priced separately and are already set at a lower rate, which you can check on our pricing page.

Can I use the student discount on a Brazilian blow dry or a conditioning treatment?

The discount applies to adult cutting and colour. Smoothing treatments and conditioning services sit outside it, though they can be added to a discounted cut or colour appointment. Ask when you book and we will talk you through the total.

Do I need a skin test?

If your appointment involves colour touching the scalp, you may do. Where one is needed it has to be done at least 48 hours before the service, so your consultation is usually the right time to sort it. That is another reason to book that first visit early.
