Why a hair colour consultation matters before you book

A hair colour consultation is the short conversation that decides whether you walk out loving your colour or living with a compromise. Before any colour touches your hair at our Hammersmith salon, Yvonne our colour specialist sits down with you to understand what you want, to look closely at the hair you have, and agree on a plan you both feel confident about. It doesn't take long, and it changes everything.

What actually happens at a consultation

Yvonne will look at your natural colour, any previous colour or box dye, and the condition of your hair. Listening to what you are hoping for, then telling you honestly what is achievable in one visit and what might take more than one. A picture can help, so bring one if you have it.

This is also where expectations get set around time and cost. Going several shades lighter, correcting an old colour, or moving from dark to blonde can take longer and cost more than a simple root tint. Knowing that upfront means no surprises in the chair, and you can check our pricing before your appointment. You can also see the full range of options on our hair colour services page.

Why it protects your hair and your money

A good consultation is as much about your hair's health as the final shade. Our colour expert checks whether your hair can take the process you are asking for. The result is colour that looks the way you pictured it and hair that still feels good afterwards. It is the difference between a colour you tolerate and one you book again and again.

When you need a skin test

If you are colouring with us for the first time, or it has been a while since your last colour, you will need a skin test before making your appointment. It is a quick patch of colour product applied behind the ear, left for 48 hours to check your skin does not react. It is a simple, important safety step. If you have ever had a reaction to hair colour or to temporary tattoos containing PPD, please tell Yvonne.

You will need to book your consultation first, then we can arrange your colour appointment for you.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a hair colour consultation take?

Usually around ten to fifteen minutes. It is enough time to look at your hair, talk through what you want, agree a plan, and book the colour appointment. For bigger changes such as colour correction, or a strand test, you may need to come back for another free consultation.

Do I have to pay for a colour consultation?

Our consultations are part of the service and not something you pay separately for. If you are unsure, call the salon and the team can arrange this for you.

Do I really need a skin test before colouring?

Yes, if it is your first colour with us or your last one was some time ago. The skin test checks you will not have a reaction to the product. It doesn't take long, but needs to be done at least 48 hours before your colour appointment.

Can I have a consultation without booking colour?

Of course. Many people come in for a consultation first to talk through their options before committing. There is no pressure to book on the day.

Book your colour consultation
